Upholding the service spirits of “people-oriented service for humanity,” “patient-first,” and “affordable healthcare,” Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital has prioritized saving patients and providing high-quality medical care since its founding. The hospital has set many precedents in Taiwan’s medical community, such as abolishing the “hospitalization deposit system” so patients do not delay treatment due to financial reasons; drastically reducing dialysis costs to preserve the quality of life for chronic kidney disease patients so they can work and live normally; reforming the physician compensation system; and strictly prohibiting all hospital staff from accepting red envelopes to eliminate bad practices. These pioneering initiatives have yielded outstanding results in guiding Taiwan’s medical field toward healthy development.
Founder Wang once mentioned the purposes of establishing Chang Gung Memorial Hospital:
1. The hospital is not for profit.
2. It aims to serve middle- and low-income citizens.
3. It should be a large-scale hospital with 1,000 to 2,000+ beds—not just for sheer size, but because scale enables sub-specialization, quality through volume, and the training of specialized talent.
4. It aims to continuously introduce and develop new medical technology and research, fostering innovation to achieve top-tier medical standards.
5. Through reasonable systems, it aims to recruit the best physicians and provide top-of-the-line equipment, ultimately becoming a world-class hospital.

To elevate Taiwan’s standard of medical care, cultivate outstanding healthcare personnel, and provide patients with top-quality medical services, brothers Wang Yung-ching and Wang Yung-tsai, founders of Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group, established the non-profit Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in 1976. Today, it stands as Taiwan’s largest and most comprehensive medical service system. Its scope of services encompasses acute and chronic medical care, long-term care, wellness, and medical/nursing education, delivering complete care across all stages of life from childhood to adulthood and old age. As a comprehensive teaching hospital integrating service, education, and research, it has achieved the highest Level-3 Class-A teaching hospital accreditation in Taiwan’s hospital evaluation system.
